PPSO Annual Picnic and Equipment Swap on July 12, 2010

It’s that time of year again! It’s our annual picnic. This is a great time to get together and hang out. This year the picnic will be held on Monday, July 12th. We will get started at 5:30 and dinner will be at 6:30.  We are holding the picnic out at Peter DeMott’s house. It’s a great location with horses, a barn and a lot of room to run around. This is a great time to just hang out and socialize with the rest of the group. You can bring any old equipment, props, backgrounds or any other photography related gear to sell or trade. We will also be doing family pictures so bring the family and be ready to smile! You can also bring your camera and photograph some of the families at the picnic. It’s a great time to practice family posing and outdoor portraiture and we couldn’t ask for a better location. So bring your family, anything you would like to sell, and your camera. Also, bring some lawn chairs, a sidedish or dessert to share and if you have some outdoor games that would be great too! Just add a comment and let us know that your coming and what dish you are bringing so we don’t all bring the same thing!!

Here is Peter’s address:

8390 Dayton Germantown Pike, Germantown, Ohio

And here is a link for a map to the above address:

I hope to see all of you there!

Was that a good program or were we just persuaded to believe it was?

We spent Monday evening with Bill Parsons and learned a very valuable set of skills that we’ll all be able to put to use as we interact with potential clients and buyers.  Understanding how people think and how to quickly build rapport with those we interact with will certainly help us to increase sales and have more successful sessions.  There was a ton of lively conversation and I think everyone had a great time.  Bill is an incredible speaker and skillfully handled the peanut gallery up front.

Black Belt Persuasion by Bill Parsons

Every once and a while in the group, we like to offer a program that is more business oriented. This month we’re bringing in Bill Parsons, a 20+ year veteran of the Dayton Police Department. While this may scare off some of you with questionable pasts and outstanding parking tickets, I don’t think you need to worry about anything. I mean it’s not like he’s from the IRS :-0. I first met Bill during a day long program on the topic about which he’ll be speaking and I learned a lot about how to be more effective when dealing with clients. I’m excited to put these solid techniques to use in consultations when I’m trying to get a bride to hire me, during a wedding when I’m trying to settle down a stressed out bride, and in sales meetings where I’m trying to sell a large canvas instead of an 8×10. Bill has scaled down the program for us and will share the following:

• The Ten Laws of Persuasion that describe the essential motivators of behavior and how to use these embedded traits to persuade people to do virtually anything we want them to do in very subtle ways.
• The Dual engine of persuasion and how both are used in conjunction with one another to cover all of your persuasion bases to satisfy your client’s needs & wants.
• The Foundation of building rapid rapport.  Rapport = trust and without trust it is virtually impossible to get people to do anything, this block will cover the verbal & nonverbal ways to build rapid trust and get your client trusting you in record time.

These three topics are the foundation of persuasion and are a logical place to start, as all other techniques and tactics spring from understanding these three areas.

If you’ve ever said “I’m a terrible sales person”, this program is for you.  If you’ve ever been frustrated with a client because the client just seems to be ignoring the advice that you’re giving them to make their session better, this program is for you.  If you just seem to want to go to this program but you can’t figure out why, it’s because I already went to it.  See you there!

Prior to opening his portrait, wedding and commercial studio in 1988 Jim taught elementary school for 14 years. Jim began making the transition from film to digital in 1995. This was long before digital instructors, digital cameras and affordable scanners. Files were being scanned by service bureaus, manipulated and a new negative made for traditional printing.
He is fortunate to make his living as a portrait photographer, a dream come true. It is no secret, however, that his true passion is nature photography. He loves the challenge of the elements be it sub zero weather, snow, poor light, wind, rain, sweltering heat or insects. He cherishes his time in nature telling the story of animal behavior that most people rarely get to see.
Jim is dedicated and passionate about wildlife photography, patiently waiting for animals to share their life with him in the wild. It is his vision to capture and share the beauty of wildlife and nature with others.
Jim will demonstrate his postproduction Photoshop techniques that will make your images rival others. He will take you through the deep recesses of Photoshop. If you know Photoshop well enough to get around, but aren’t using many of the advance features, this program will prove invaluable in raising your awareness and skill level to new heights. The latest insider tips will teach you how to create and edit images with expert results. Learn how to apply techniques to real-world situations.

February Focus

Tom Walter started our year out right with his great program that took a look at the business side of photography. We are really excited about our February speaker. It was clear from the annual print competition that there was a great deal of interest in learning more about lighting so we invited Lew Everling to speak in February. Here’s some info on Lew:

Although most people first come to know Lew Everling as an extraordinarily gifted photographer, those who know him well understand that his dynamic personality and passion for life is unquestionably his greatest talent. Lew has learned how to turn his passion into profit by thinking outside the realms of traditional photographic thought with inventive marketing techniques and old world service oriented philosophies.  It’s the personality that becomes a magnetic force in your approach to your clients, your work and passion for the craft. From the age of 11 when he learned to make a black and white print on an elementary school field trip, Lew has immersed himself in photography, earning his Craftsman degree in just under 6 months. An avid volunteer with PPA, PPI, ASP and the Silly Smiles Inc. Lew enjoys watching others grow and share in the excitement of that “ A ha” moment when it all comes together. Lew owns a 2300 square foot studio/gallery in Kokomo, Indiana just minutes from a 3-acre portrait park. Lew teaches new and establishes artists how to creatively promote themselves by embracing life-long learning opportunities, creating strong networking circles, and developing effective self-promotion collateral.

Join us for Lew’s program on Lighting. Here is some information on what would be covered:

Today more than ever professionals need to set themselves apart from the pack. It’s not always the flashiest equipment that does the trick, but how you use what you have. Putting everything together as a professional the most efficient way to do that is through mastering your lighting skills. Putting your compositional skills to work, some emotion and creating the mood with subtle control of highlight and shadow is what will set you apart from the department stores and so many competitors. I teach some very simple changes that can be done with just about any existing set up to make your work sing!

Also, don’t forget to bring your entry for the “8×10″ Monthly Print Competition. Winners receive points towards becoming “Photographer of the Year.” Remember, the print does not have to be 8×10 in size – it just cannot exceed 100 square inches.

January Meeting Information

“THE ART OF BUSINESS IN THE BUSINESS OF ART”

Tom Walter

Tom’s career in photography began as a love affair – literally.  Working as a business and financial planner, Tom met his future wife Cheryl, who was working for a local photographer.  They bought the studio, went into business together, and got married – in that order.  For 19 years they have grown Stone Garden Studio into a solid studio business that has survived a location change, a name change and several downturns in their local economy.  Their “division of labor” is a major factor in the studio’s success.

Tom is a St. Marys, Ohio native with a B.A. in Economics from Yale University.  He has operated a business and estate planning practice in addition to Stone Garden Studio and has 9 years of experience in the technology field.  As a hobby, he coaches – high school and junior high levels.  In 2004, he completed the Approved Business Instructor class at the PPA offices in Atlanta, and he is currently working toward his Craftsman degree and Certificate of Business Management.

The Art of Business in the Business of Art -Program information

Few industries have gone through such drastic change as the photography industry.  The conversion from film to digital capture not only changed how professional photographers do business, but with whom professionals are competing for business.  The digital age also brought a new required skill set in computer technologies – from photo enhancement of images to web site development for advertising and marketing.  Heap on top of that a couple economic recessions, a flood of new photographers, and there are a lot of “established” photographers looking for gainful employment.

Tom will recount and discuss a spectrum of decisions that his studio has made to keep it successful and growing.  From photography techniques to targeting a market and basic business structure and development, this program will cover ideas that worked (and maybe a few that didn’t).  Business based pricing and pitfalls to profitability will give anyone attending some solid concepts for consideration in their own business.

This is a program you do not want to miss!!

See y’all on January 4th!!
